Book AppointmentWhat Is the Main Cause of Dry Eyes?
Tear production plays an important role in preventing dry eye. Your tears are made up of 3 layers:
- The oily outer layer
- The watery middle layer
- The inner mucus layer
Dry eye can occur when the glands that produce these elements of your tears are not functioning properly or become inflamed. Inflammation of the glands that line your eyelids can also lead to meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD).
What Is MGD?
Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is a common condition that occurs when the meibomian glands in the eyelids become blocked or inflamed, impairing their ability to secrete oil onto the surface of the eye. These oils are essential for maintaining the quality and quantity of tears produced by your eyes. When the meibomian glands aren’t functioning properly, it can lead to dry eye symptoms.
MGD can be caused by factors such as aging, hormonal changes, certain medications, and environmental conditions. It’s important to seek treatment for MGD to prevent long-term damage and alleviate dry eye symptoms.
Diagnosing Dry Eye
Diagnosing dry eye syndrome can be challenging, as symptoms can vary widely between individuals and may be caused by a variety of underlying factors. However, one effective tool that our optometrists use to diagnose dry eye is meibography.
Meibography is a specialized imaging technology that allows our optometrists to get an in-depth look at the meibomian glands in the eyelids. By taking high-resolution images of the glands, we can assess their function and determine whether they are blocked or inflamed.
Our Dry Eye Treatments
We offer a variety of dry eye treatments and solutions, including OptiLight by Lumenis, Bruder masks, and other medical treatments to help address your dry eye symptoms and help you find relief.
Our team can work with you to find the right treatment solution for your specific dry eye needs.
OptiLight by Lumenis
OptiLight by Lumenis is a light-based, noninvasive treatment done in the area below the eyes to manage dry eye. The first and only IPL FDA-approved for dry eye management.
The treatment is safe, gentle, and is backed by more than 20 clinical studies.
OptiLight uses precise pulses of light to reduce the inflammation that is typically associated with dry eye disease, improve tear break-up time, and increase meibomian gland functionality.
Bruder Masks
Bruder Masks are specially designed masks that apply heat to the eyelids, improving the quality and quantity of natural tears produced by the eyes. By using Bruder Masks, patients can relieve dry eye symptoms such as irritation, burning, and redness. The masks are noninvasive, comfortable to wear, and can be used conveniently at home.
Tea Tree Oil
When used as a treatment for dry eye, tea tree oil may help reduce inflammation and improve the overall health of the eyes.
Tea tree oil contains natural compounds that have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, making it an effective treatment for dry eye symptoms such as grittiness, redness, and irritation. It can also help stimulate the meibomian glands in the eyelids, which produce oils that keep the eyes lubricated.
Medicated Eye Drops
If you’re dealing with chronic dry eye, medicated eye drops such as RESTASIS and Xiidra can help. These eye drops contain an active ingredient that can help reduce inflammation and increase your eye’s natural ability to produce tears.
Our clinic offers a variety of prescription and over-the-counter eye drops designed to relieve dryness and improve tear production.
